A connected example

COLD → CORD → CARD → WARD → WARM

Each step changes one letter in its original position. COLD→CORD changes L to R; CORD→CARD changes O to A; CARD→WARD changes C to W; WARD→WARM changes D to M. All five words belong to this dictionary. This takes four changes, a shortest route.

Word families such as CARE, DARE, FARE and HARE share the pattern _ARE: any two differ in one position. A family can give several next moves, but it does not guarantee a route to every target.

How to choose a practice list

Start with words you know, inspect the neighbors, then choose a target in the Generator. “Many” and “few” describe direct connection counts, not reading age or vocabulary difficulty. An isolated word has no legal next move in this list. Two non-isolated words can still belong to different components.

The results load in batches of 60, and Print includes only the displayed words. Narrow the first letter or connection filter before printing. Use the Solver to check a complete route.

Dictionary and learner suitability

These tools use the same fixed 5,528 four-letter words as the home game and Solver. The source list is CC0; dictionary utilities are MIT licensed. It includes uncommon, dated, offensive and adult terms. It is not a children’s safe word list. A low step count does not mean familiar vocabulary. Review both the words and the complete answer before using a worksheet with learners. Sources and licenses.
