How this word card solitaire works

This original Word Trail game combines category matching with a solitaire table: hidden cards, exposed columns, a stock, a waste pile and limited category slots. Every category has its own card and four word cards. All 30 levels are fixed deals, from small introductions to five-category tables.

Legal moves and revealing cards

Open an empty slot with a category card. Word cards can only be collected in the slot for their category. A completed category leaves the table automatically, freeing the slot. Collected cards cannot be taken back except with Undo.

Within the columns, place a card onto a face-up card of the same category, or into an empty column. You can move a continuous exposed tail of same-category words together in one move. Category cards move alone. Cards covered by another category cannot be picked up. Removing the last exposed card automatically flips the next hidden card.

Draw sends one stock card to the waste. Only the top waste card is playable. When the stock runs out, Recycle returns the waste in its original order. Recycling is repeatable, but every draw and recycle uses one move. Wrong destinations leave the board and move count unchanged.

Plan the space, not just the matches

You have fewer category slots than categories. Opening a category commits that slot until you finish it, so look for ways to uncover its missing words. A temporary same-category stack or empty column can release a buried category card. Later levels add categories, deeper hidden piles and less spare move allowance. These labels compare this library’s structure; they do not measure your vocabulary.

Winning, getting stuck and using hints

Collect every category to win. If you spend your last move without finishing, the deal ends. Undo reverses a move, its cost and any revealed card. Restart returns the same deal after confirmation; it keeps your completed-level record.

Every starting deal has a verified winning route. Your later choices may leave no winning route within the remaining moves. Hint looks for a route from your current position and explains the next action; Apply hint makes that one move. A search can stop without finding a route. That does not prove the position is impossible. Undo or Restart is always available after a failed plan.

Saving and controls

The current deal, recent actions and completed levels are saved only in this browser when local storage is available. Refreshing restores the deal and Undo history. Clearing browser data removes the save; there is no account or cross-device sync. If a save cannot be read, a fresh deal opens. If saving is unavailable, you can still play until you leave or refresh.

Use click or tap to select a card, then its destination. Tab, Enter and Space cover the same actions; Escape cancels a selection. Arrow keys move between card-table controls. Desktop mouse dragging is an optional shortcut. The page scrolls normally; no fullscreen mode is required.

Original game and vocabulary

Word Trail created this implementation, card layout, category combinations and fixed deals. Categories use everyday meanings; a word belongs only to its displayed deck’s intended category. This is an independent game, not an official version of any other app or website. No competitor code, artwork or levels are included.
